Step-by-Step Instructions On How to Get Your TikTok Account Unbanned

There are steps you can take to have your account unbanned if you believe your account has been banned incorrectly. This is by filing an appeal to have it reinstated.

Let's go over the steps for submitting an appeal to TikTok.

How to Submit an Appeal to Get Your TikTok Account Unbanned

Here are the step-by-step instructions for submitting an appeal to have your permanent TikTok ban lifted:

  1. Open TikTok.
  2. Go to your notifications.
  3. Click on the notification informing you that your account has been banned.
  4. Tap "Appeal."
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the app.

There is also a second method for appealing your TikTok ban.

This method works if you received a temporary ban and don't want to wait the allotted time before you can post again or again; you feel like the temporary ban was unwarranted.

Here are the step-by-step instructions for contacting TikTok Support about having your account unbanned:

  1. Open TikTok.
  2. Tap the profile icon to go to your profile.
  3. Tap the three lines in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
  4. Click "Settings and privacy" from the list of options.
  5. Scroll down and choose "Report a Problem."
  6. At the bottom of the screen, tap "Submit a report."
  7. Fill out the information in a brief format about your issue.

Then, all you have to do is await a response from TikTok customer support.

Temporary Bans vs. Permanent Bans on TikTok

Let's discuss the difference between temporary and permanently banned TikTok accounts. Understanding this difference is important for understanding how and if you can get your TikTok account unbanned.

Temporary Ban

When you receive a banner notification that your account has been temporarily banned, it will say something like, "Due to multiple violations of our community guidelines, you're temporarily blocked from posting."

It will also provide a date and time that your posting capabilities will be reinstated.

While a temporary ban is still bad news, it's better than a permanent ban. A temporary ban relieves TikTok users because they know when their accounts will be reinstated. It should also be a major warning to ensure your content follows TikTok's posting policies.

With a temporary TikTok ban:

  • It will typically pass automatically in 24-48 hours.
  • You will have your posting capabilities reinstated at the date and time provided.
  • Multiple videos were probably removed before this.
  • You can still have a view-only experience on the TikTok app.

Permanent Ban

A permanently banned TikTok account is more serious than a temporarily banned account. TikTok will reinstate a temporarily banned account, but you must appeal a permanently banned TikTok account. After committing so many previous violations of TikTok community guidelines, it's likely that users will lose their appeals.

When TikTok permanently bans your account, and you lose your appeal after working hard to grow your following, it can be very disappointing. It also means that if you want to continue using the app, you will have to create a new account. If you find your TikTok account permanently banned, sometimes, TikTok even bans your device too, meaning you would have to access the TikTok mobile app from another mobile device, laptop, or tablet.

If you have your TikTok account permanently banned:

  • You can submit an appeal to have it lifted.
  • Your chances of winning your appeal are slim because you've already committed so many violations of the app's community guidelines.
  • It should not come as a surprise.
  • You probably received multiple violations and temporary bans before the permanent ban.
  • If you lose your appeal, your handle is now a permanently banned TikTok account, and there is no way to go from a banned TikTok account to an unbanned TikTok account in this situation.
  • You will have to create a new TikTok account.

Why Did My TikTok Account Get Banned?

Understanding why TikTok banned your account in the first place will help you prevent it from happening again in the future. Your account will be banned when your content consistently violates TikTok's community guidelines .

Someone Reported Your Content

Other users will typically be the ones to flag your content and bring it to TikTok's attention. This means that someone saw your video, thought it violated TikTok's guidelines, and decided to report it to TikTok.

However, just because someone reported your video doesn't always mean TikTok finds it in violation of its policies. After watching the reported video, TikTok's team makes a decision on whether or not it violates community guidelines.

If TikTok determines that your video does not violate its guidelines, it will be reinstated. However, many users still report a black mark on their account even if the ruling was in their favor that it didn't violate the app's policies. This can be discouraging for some users.

Underage Accounts

One of the most wide-sweeping reasons many accounts were banned on TikTok is because the users did not meet the age requirements for creating an account. TikTok reached a settlement agreement with the Federal Trade Commission because they were in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

Initially, TikTok allowed anyone to create an account, no matter how old they were. TikTok requires you to input your birthday when creating an account. However, the app still allowed anyone to open a new account regardless of age.

After the settlement with the FTC, TikTok had to ban all users under the age of 13 in the United States. For some unfortunate users who had entered an inaccurate birthdate, TikTok also banned their accounts too.

If you've had a similar issue where you put in the wrong birthdate and TikTok banned your account, you will want to follow prove you're actually of age by submitting an underage appeal. To get your banned TikTok account back, you must provide age proof. You can use your government-issued ID to verify your age.

What Kind of Content Gets Banned on TikTok?

TikTok has a detailed guidelines page that discusses at length the type of content that violates the platform.

Content that directly violates the social media platform's guidelines includes:

  • Fake engagement, which includes content that is designed to falsely boost your popularity on the social media platform (see our Social Boosting review)
  • Copyright, trademark, or intellectual property rights violations
  • Challenges that depict dangerous acts and harmful activities that could lead to serious injury
  • Impersonation of other people
  • Bullying and harassment, including blackmail and hacking threats
  • Misinformation that causes significant harm to other people
  • Hateful behavior, including hate speech and hateful ideology
  • Threats of violence, including violent extremism
  • Activities that depict self-harm, disordered eating, and suicide
  • Nudity and graphic content
  • Posted by someone who doesn't meet the age requirements of the platform
  • Abuse of a minor
  • Illegal activities

Understanding Content Moderation on TikTok

Understanding how content is moderated on TikTok will help you prevent your account from receiving a permanent ban on the app.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when interacting on the app and trying to prevent getting your TikTok account banned:

  • Make sure each post abides by the community guidelines of the TikTok app
  • Take removed videos and temporary bans seriously to prevent your account from being permanently banned
  • Beware of posting content that includes minors. For this reason, you'll hear many users say things like, "Everyone in this video is over the age of 21" before beginning a video that includes them drinking.

Protecting Your Thriving TikTok Account from Being Permanently Banned

After learning how to be verified on TikTok and working hard to grow your account, the last thing you want to receive is a permanent TikTok ban.

The best way to protect your TikTok account from being banned permanently is to ensure you follow TikTok's community guidelines. If you make a mistake and violate TikTok's community guidelines, the next best thing you can do is listen to the warnings they give you.

TikTok usually gives you many warnings before they permanently ban accounts outright. Typically, you will first have a video removed, then multiple TikTok videos removed, then your account temporarily banned, and if you post content to consistently violate community guidelines, you will be permanently banned. In most cases, TikTok gives the account owner several warnings before you have your use of the platform from that account taken away.

What it Means if Your TikTok Video is Flagged or Reported

Pay attention when TikTok flags or reports your videos. This is considered the first violation and the first step in receiving an account ban.

TikTok will alert you by sending you a banner notification when it removes your video. It will typically say something like, "A video you posted was removed for violating our community guidelines." The notification will tell you the video and when you posted it.

Having a Backup Account

Whether you're running the best TikTok ads or using the best techniques to build a social media following, growing your following on TikTok is a big effort. For this reason, many people with professional TikTok accounts are proactive about protecting themselves in case of a permanent account ban. They do this by creating a second account alongside their first account.

It is up to you whether or not you want to manage a second account, just in case TikTok bans your primary account. Having two accounts also ensures that you have your second choice for a username too.

Moving Forward After TikTok banned Your account

Beyond understanding how to get your TikTok account unbanned by filing an appeal, we designed this guide to help you understand how to prevent TikTok from banning your account in the first place. Once you understand the type of content that will get removed from the app, you can make sure your content aligns with TikTok's community guidelines, and you won't be banned in the future.
